One of the longest running shows, Little Shop of Horrors, gets its popularity from its captivating sci-fi horror and comedy aspects with a 1960’s pop/rock score. With its wicked sense of humour and an ageless story of basic human nature; wanting to be loved and a desire to be more than what we are, leads it to be one of the most popular shows in the world.
Set in a florist shop, Skid Row downtown LA, Seymour, Audrey and their boss Mr. Mushnik are trying to keep the business alive in challenging times. Until a strange and interesting plant, with a thirst for human blood, brings a promise of fame and fortune, an aspect of hope to a place of gloom. Our Trio of street Urchins, acting as a Greek chorus, narrate for the audience and move them through the action while adding a 60’s girl group vibe. In typical Greek tragedy style, our hero Seymour, has everyone hurt around him and eventually leads to a reversal of fortune. We learn that this carnivorous plant has extra-terrestrial origins and wants world-domination.
With its elaborate set, Fosse inspired choreography and sassy 60’s aspects, this is a musical for all ages. As the show ends with the final number “Don’t Feed the Plants”, the message to the audience is clear; be careful what you wish for as there is a terrible price to pay.
