Grads will soon be seventy years old!

Next year is 2022. It will be seventy years since Grads first performance at the University of WA, in 1952.

Twelve years after that first performance, in 1964, Grads began its long and fruitful association with the New Fortune Theatre.

This unique venue was built when it was realised that the courtyard of the new Arts Department lent itself perfectly to a performance space based on a traditional Shakespearian outdoor theatre. It was one of the first of its kind in the world, predating London’s Globe Theatre by decades. The first performance was Hamlet, directed by Jeana Bradley.

Since 1995 Grads has performed in the New Fortune twenty three times.

As we approach our milestone, Grads is planning its Annual General Meeting for 2021.

It will be held, appropriately enough, at the Shakespeare Garden, the beautiful garden at the rear of the New Fortune Theatre, where we have just completed our successful season of Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors. Entrance is from the stage.

You don’t have to be a UWA graduate.
