AUDITION: Shakespeare

Auditions
William Shakespeare’s Long Lost First Play (abridged) by Reed Martin and Austin Tichenor
Directed by Vanessa Jensen
Saturday 11th September 10.30am – 12.00pm or Sunday 12th September 2.30pm – 4.00pm.
Melville Theatre Company, corner Stock Rd and Canning Hwy, Palmyra
Season: November 19, 20, 25, 26, 27 and December 2, 3, 4 @ 8pm and Sunday 28 @ 2pm
An unpaid community theatre production.
About the play:
Using questionable scholarship and street performer smarts, Reed Martin and Austin Tichenor weave together most of the famous speeches and plot devices of Shakespeare’s thirty-nine plays to create a fast, funny and fictional fortieth! Throw in some pop culture references, Disney, Pig-Latin, and lots and lots of twins and you have a fantastic (and occasionally slightly infantile) show that should be a hoot to perform and see.
The cast:
Three actors (of any gender, age, and ethnicity) who play “themselves” (Austin, Reed and Teddy), and who also play multiple roles from Shakespeare’s fictional long lost first play (and later recreated in all his more well-known plays!)
Austin: an enthusiastic academic
Reed: a pragmatic tough guy (or gal)
Teddy: a sincere and excited innocent
The three actors must be:
1. available for the whole rehearsal period. As this play is essentially a three hander, a cast member not attending rehearsals will make it very difficult for the others.
2. versatile, able to switch between playing their character in the script and a multitude of Shakespearean roles.
3. capable of learning a lot of dialogue and remembering a lot of blocking. This play is fast, frantic and the three actors are onstage almost all the time.
4. physically fit, as mentioned above, this play is fast and frantic. There is a lot of running on and off stage, quick changes, heading down into the audience etc.
There are two other minor characters, Dale, and Gail, two special roles that will ideally be played by the ASM and SM.
Rehearsals:
Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and Sundays. Rehearsal days may be altered depending on cast availability. No rehearsals the first week of the school holidays (Sept 25th – October 3rd).
Audition:
A group audition, in which each auditionee will deliver the chorus prologue (provided in advance) as well as some excerpts from the script with other auditionees (provided on the day).
There may also be a bit of physical movement work, whistling and learning Pig Latin!
Saturday 11th September 10.30am – 12.00pm or Sunday 12th September 2.30pm – 4.00pm
