AUDITION: My Mother Said I Never Should

Audition Notice Saturday 29th January

from 10am at Hackett Hall in Floreat

Playlovers production being performed at The Old Mill Theatre from 1st to 16th April

A compelling play for all you women who have been waiting for something ‘meaty’ to sink your teeth into …… examining the ever-changing mother-child relationship. It is clear that when we are young our lives are formed and as an adult we carry the baggage we have collected and were not able to discard along the way. There is no chronological sequence as the play draws circles around issues that many women have faced and still face, in many ways, today.

Characters: All must be prepared to also play their character as a young girl in some scenes. Very strong acting skills required as all roles are demanding. English accents are necessary and can be worked on during rehearsal process.

Doris Partington: Age range 60+. Born in Oldham near Manchester England in 1900.

No nonsense matriarchal type. Lancashire accent.

Margaret Bradley: Age range 40+. Born in Cheadle Hulme, posh side of Manchester in 1931

Doris’ daughter. Wartime Mum. Tries hard to ‘keep up appearances’. Lancashire accent but much softer

Jackie Metcalfe: Age range 28+. Born in Surrey near London 1951.

Margarets’ daughter. Child of her generation. Rebellious. Pushes boundaries. Surrey accent which is fairly well-spoken English

Rosie Metcalfe: Age range 16+. Jackie’s daughter, brought up by Margaret. Soft Lancashire accent. She believes that Margaret is her Mother and that Jackie is her older sister.
