SHOW SYNOPSIS:
Grandpa’s a little out of practice when it comes to babysitting, but if he’s ever going to get his bouncy grandkids to go to sleep, he’s got to remember some bedtime stories fast. Or at least something pretty close to them. Meet the Witch who lives in a house made of broccoli, the magical fairies Panadol and Claratyne, and Jack who climbs a beanstalk – and needs a little help from the stage crew to get down. You may think you know your fairy tales, but not the way Grandpa tells them.
ROLES:
There are 9 roles being cast, and each actor will play between 2 and 4 characters.
GRANDPA – Loveably grumpy and crotchety old man. He loves his grandchildren deeply, he’s just out of practice.
WALLY, ASHLEY, KATIE – The three grandchildren. Excited for Grandpa’s bedtime stories, although they aren’t sure he knows exactly what he is doing.
HANS, GRETEL – Wide-eyed fairy tale characters who accidentally stumble into a bit of trouble with a witch. German accents required.
DAD, MOM – Hans and Gretel’s parents. More interested in their phones and work than their children.
WITCH – Evil witch whose cottage is made out of… broccoli? She tries to cook and eat Hans and Gretel.
OVEN – Didn’t even want to be in this ‘dumb play’, and is only here because their mum made them.
BRIAR ROSE – A typical fairytale princess. A little oblivious to the world around her and obsessed with flowers. RP accent required.
PANADOL, CLARATYNE, METAMUCIL – Three fairies who give Briar Rose very… interesting gifts, and raise her until the age of sixteen. They don’t have a lot of maternal experience.
PRINCE – Prince Charming. Except, he isn’t exactly the most charming and is more confused about the situation he’s found himself in.
KING, QUEEN – Briar Rose’s parents. They find this whole ‘curse’ thing a bit too much and would prefer that everything was far more normal.
MISTY – Evil fairy who is just annoyed she wasn’t invited to the party.
BUILDING INSPECTOR – Irritated inspector who just wants people to follow the rules regarding giant beanstalks.
COW – Definitely can’t talk… cows can’t talk!Or can they? Sarcastic and witty.
GOOSE – Was once bitten by a radioactive goose. Dry and sarcastic, with comic moments.
BEAN SELLER – Seedy candy seller who somehow convinces Jack that a cow is worth the same as a few beans. Very strong brooklyn accent required.
JACK – Young, excitable, and carefree. Searching for adventure anywhere he goes, whether up a beanstalk or on the ground with a cow.
JILL – Young, but with a good head on her shoulders and very sensible. Definitely not in love with Jack.
JACK’S DAD – Absent father. More interested in chip-dip and sports than his family.
JACK’S MOM – Overbearing mother. Just wants to be able to have enough money to survive, and is constantly frustrated at Jack’s antics.
SHANNON, EDNA – The two giants who live up on top of the beanstalk. Their solution whenever they meet someone who is different to them is to eat them for lunch.
